The Best Tennis Kits We’ve Seen at the US Open So Far

There was a lot to look at during the US Open this week—a few greats attempting to reclaim their titles (go Coco!), so-fast-you-can’t-see-’em serves, and surprising celebrity sightings (um, how’s it going, Alec Baldwin?).

And in keeping tradition with previous US Open tournaments (and tennis’s long, fashion-centric history in general), players hit the court serving aces and looks. Here are some of the boldest, most colorful outfits we saw at this week’s big party in Flushing, Queens to add to your court mood board.

1. Coco Gauff, United States

After a frustrating, tearful exit from the 2024 Olympics just a month prior, Coco Gauff hit the US Open court on Day 1 ready to reclaim her 2023 women’s singles crown in a custom yellow and cornflower blue New Balance kit. Judging by her accessories, Gauff has put her Paris upset behind her (or come to terms with it): She wore an Olympic rings necklace while clinching a win over France’s Varvara Gracheva to move to the next round.

2. Naomi Osaka, Japan

Tennis royalty and fashion icon Naomi Osaka decided to gift us plebeians the US Open look of a lifetime when she walked out to her Round 1 match wrapped in a massive mint bow (with matching bows on her shoes and headphones), a tutu with ruffles, and a pearl-lined headpiece. No surprise here: Osaka also dominated the match as a queen would, winning over Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko. The four-time Grand Slam champ debuted another coquette-themed outfit (this one in black) for her match against Karolína Muchová on Thursday.

3. Ben Shelton, United States

21-year-old Ben Shelton crushed Austria’s Dominic Thiem on Monday in an On ensemble that was giving rainbow sherbert on a sticky summer day. Prior to his win, the tennis phenom could be found juggling three tennis balls in the getup. Was it a warmup, assertion of dominance, or possible side hustle? We’re dying to know.

4. Frances Tiafoe, United States

Clearly, sherbet was a major theme (I mean, flavor?) for men’s on-court tennis outfits this week at the Open: In his opening round match, Frances Tiafoe sailed past Aleksandar Kovacevic with a win while wearing a soothing shade of violet.

5. Marta Kostyuk, Ukraine

Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine showed up to Day 1 in a neon yellow, flowy outfit that was impossible to miss even if you were in the very last row (in the absolute highest section) of Arthur Ashe Stadium. As she recently told Vogue, Kostyuk is no stranger to on-court fashion: Her 2024 “Wimbledon white” (all players have to wear the hue) was meant to pay homage to wedding white, quite literally—it’s a near-exact copy of the dress she wore down the aisle.

6. Ajla Tomljanović, Australia

Australia’s Ajla Tomljanović toppled over American Ann Li in the first round on Day 1 in a forest green midriff-baring outfit from Original Penguin.

7. Jessica Pegula, United States

American Jessica Pegula knocked off fellow US player (and friend) Shelby Rogers while debuting Adidas’ latest tennis collection in a late-evening match on Day 2 of the tournament. The fact that the outfit made its first appearance in Flushing was no accident: Per a statement from the brand, the block-colored, cutout-heavy collection was “inspired by the hard courts of New York.”

8. Brandon Nakashima, United States

Brandon Nakashima of the US suited up in a red, blue, and off-white pinstripe polo for his Round 2 win against Arthur Cazaux of France on Day 3 of the competition. It’s made by FILA, a company that also sponsors the phenom-on-the-rise.
